“In these troubled times, out of an abundance of caution” (or ITTTooaAoC) starts off just about every email I receive announcing the cancellation of an event, or the closing of another office location due to COVID-19.
Companies in the tech sectors that we follow must suddenly change their work habits. If they didn’t have a remote work culture, they are getting a crash course in it now.
WFH is not a stretch for an analyst like myself. Beyond our tradeshow visits, we always conducted most of our briefings and talks from our home offices.
Now, like me, the vendors are also at home. It’s fun to hear and see kids and dogs and cats stealing the scene in the background, rather than the glass walls of Conference Room B.
What changed for me? I still have a job to do now, when so many others have been laid off, or lost the small business they spent a lifetime building, simply because they picked the wrong industry.... | |

Everyone knows Hans Christian Andersen’s cautionary tale. Yet, no one wants to think of themselves as the emperor. I fear, however, that when it comes to the much-buzzed-about topic of digital transformation, too many enterprise leaders are unwittingly playing the part.
I was recently interviewed on the Process Excellence Networks podcast and dove into this topic using a slightly different metaphor. The star performer in many enterprise IT shops is open source. Twenty years ago, who could have predicted the billions of dollars in value generated by contributions to Linux and the Apache Foundation alone, much less the ecosystem of projects that have grown up into mature software products around it?
Open source software is a beautiful thing. Practically free, transparently brought into the world, and hardened by concerned communities of developers. But developing your own business software on top of open source is not all “Kum-ba-ya” and sunshine. This free software isn’t entirely free or without risk.

While DataStax and Instaclustr clearly have overlapping offerings, their focus is different, said Jason Bloomberg, president at analyst and advisory firm Intellyx.
“DataStax’s sweet spot is hybrid IT and multi-cloud scenarios, while Instaclustr focuses on supporting a range of open source data infrastructure products in public cloud and multi-cloud environments,” Bloomberg said.
Bloomberg said he doesn’t see a direct link between the coronavirus pandemic and demand for a Cassandra operator, though there is an indirect one.
